Greater than the sum of our parts

by Stephanie Klotz on Jun 20, 2017

A lot has happened since we launched the global C&A Foundation in 2014, with a bold and ambitious goal to make fashion a force for good. Our 2016 Annual Report shows not how much we've achieved in a short time - and how far we still have to go. But more importantly, the report illustrates the power of a collaborative approach.

“Our vision is a global apparel industry based on dignity, fairness and the preservation and enhancement of natural capital," says Leslie Johnston, C&A Foundation Executive Director. “But it's not something we can do on our own. That's why we support and strengthen partners and platforms to be better able to inspire all of us to play our part."

The Annual Report charts encouraging progress in important areas, like organic cotton for example.

In India, we've helped over 25,000 farmers make the transition away from conventional cotton farming. With local government on board as well, we're tackling the issue from different angles and laying the foundations for sustainable, lasting change.

“The challenges we all face, in the fashion industry and beyond, are so vast that we simply can't work in isolation. But together we are greater than the sum of our parts and I'm confident that that approach is the right one.”

From Brazil to Bangladesh, we're also sparking change in other challenging areas of the fashion industry like forced labour, transparency and accountability, circular economy, and building resilience in vulnerable communities.

“While we have achieved a lot, we still need to do much more to transform our industry," says Leslie.

“The world now has a common development agenda in the form of the Sustainable Development Goals, for other funders, businesses, government and civil society to work towards. We see this as an invaluable opportunity to make sure our work complements that of others so that, together, we can make an accelerative impact."
